BUSINESS INDICATORS CONTINUE TO SHOW ST. TAMMANY LEADING POST-KATRINA REVITALIZATION

Mandeville, LA-Statistics released today by the St. Tammany Economic Development Foundation (STEDF) for the third quarter of 2006 show that the Parish continues to grow its economic base.

More than $72 million in new and expanded projects were announced for the first 8 ½ months of 2006 (January 1-August 12, 2006). These projects will bring an estimated 2,824 permanent jobs and 1,975 construction jobs to St. Tammany.

New commercial building activity shows that many of these projects are well underway, with third-quarter 2006 permit applications for new and repair projects up more than 83 percent from the third quarter of 2005.

STEDF Executive Director Brenda Reine said, "The significant growth in commercial building activity indicates that St. Tammany continues to be a preferred site in which to locate and operate a business. With the population growth of the area, our goal is to work with our existing businesses as well as attract new businesses that will bring quality jobs to our citizens."

Both third-quarter and year-to-date retail sales were more than 50 percent higher as compared to 2005. But, because the period included both pre-Katrina and post-Katrina sales revenues, Reine said she expects the sales comparisons to level off for the fourth quarter report.

"From here on out, our sales revenues will provide a more accurate comparison to assess growth in the retail sector," she said.

"Although economic indicators have yet to stabilize from the post-Katrina boom, all signs are positive towards prolonged enhancement of our economy," said St. Tammany Parish President Kevin Davis.
