The New Landscape of Louisiana
The "toe of Louisiana's boot," represents State and region's commitment to strategic growth. The parish's historic roots in economic development, proven ability to listen and respond to community and commercial interests, and its vitality is especially enticing to those seeking the unique combination of a progressive government and "quieter life-style"— as alternative to the surrounding metropolitans

such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge (both

less than an hour away) and those in Mississippi that create the parish's border both north and east.

The two largest cities of the parish are Bogalusa and the parish seat, Franklinton. Quiet streets, tightly knit neighborhoods and a number of historically preserved homes, are surrounded by open farmland, rolling hills, and stately oaks and groves of pines trees. Large seasonal festivals further instill the sense of community including Franklinton's July Watermelon Festival and the Washington Parish Free Fair in October, often touted as the nation's largest free fair drawing attendees from all over the country to live music, a 5K marathon, flower festivals, Rodeo events, parades, and great food among other activities.

Six colleges are within 90 minutes of the most distant cities of the parish, and the Louisiana State Technical College has a branch in Bogalusa. The economy of the region is based in agriculture and timber and paper, but has seen tremendous growth in textiles and specialty manufacturing with purposefully developed Industrial Parks in the major cities. In addition, a new state park is under construction just south of Franklinton on Highway 25. The park should be completed in 2009 and provide additional opportunities for camping and recreation.
